After breakfast we will visit a local school where our parner NGO carries out a sports project: sports teachers who have a disability give sports lessons to children with a disability. We have been carrying out this project for more than 10 years and it has been life changing for many Ethiopian children with a disability. Right after that we leave the city and drive south towards the Southern Ethiopian highlands, a region where many Ethiopian runners are from. We have lunch in Asella, the birthplace of the famous Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie. Then we continue further south to the town of Bekoji, also known as the ‘Town of Runners’. Many Ehtiopian champions are from this village!

On arrival we go by local taxi to a training center in the village, the next generation of Ethiopian running talent lives and trains here. We meet coach Sinteyahu, a famous coach who has trained many generations of Ethiopian athletes. He is already retired but is still involved with the youth of Bekoji and coaches them every day. We spend the night in a simple but proper guesthouse in the village, do not expect any luxury, but it is safe and clean. We eat together in a local restaurant.
With our runner-guides, and led by coaches of Bekoji, we are part of an intensive training in the forest. It will be a physical challenge, but also a beautiful experience. After breakfast there is time to see more of Bekoji.

We visit young runners at their homes, most of them live together in small sheds far away from their families. They will share their dreams and ambitions with us. After lunch we leave Bekoji and drive further south to the Bale Mountains, one of the spectacular mountain ranges of Ethiopia. On the way we enjoy the beautiful scenery and we make a short walk in a forest. We spend the night a simple but decent hotel on the foot of the mountains.
This National Park is is concentrated around a big mountain plateau that is located on more than 4000 meters altitude. The nature has adapted to the high altitude with strange vegetation as result. The area looks like a moon landscape! The valleys however are covered with dense rainforest and is teamed with life. This is also the habitat of the Ethiopian Wolf, a very rare canine, but chances are good we will see them. We bring lunchboxes and spend a full day in the mountains. In the evening we dine in the restaurant of the hotel.
Rastafari became known in the world through mainly Reggae Music and especially Bob Marley.
For most participants, it is not only a sports event, but also a celebration of national pride and joy. It is a festive event with music and cultural acts along the way. Those who want to run fast can start in the fast lane. If you wan to run with official time registration we can register you with the elite runners. But you have to be able to complete 10 kilometers in 43 minutes. After the run we bring you back to our guesthouse where a lunch is provided. The rest of the day you are free to relax or explore the city further. Our cars and guides are available to assist you.

Ethiopia Alternative Tours

Our journeys combine classic touring of Ethiopia's magnificent resources, with meaningful cultural experiences and 'giving back' to the communities we visit. Together with our Ethiopian partners we have a supportive relationship with the Dires House of Sport. The organisation benefits from our tours, and most of our groups visit the facility in Addis Ababa, some to volunteer their time and skills.

Come and be part of the ongoing story of Ethiopia's development into one of Africa's most dynamic countries.
Responsible and just forms of tourism offer communities opportunities to share their cultures, tell their stories, request solidarity and foster tolerance and greater understanding.

Social tourism also means giving back to the communities that are visited. Green Olive Tours benefit local NGOs and charities through their involvement in our programs, volunteering, and making souvenir purchases from local craftspeople and small family run businesses.

Both our tour company and the individual tourist have a responsibility towards their host community.

Adopt a considerate attitude towards the people you encounter, the environment, and host communities in Ethiopia.

Respect and learn about the local culture. Although taking pictures is in general welcome, be aware of people’s sensitivity about being photographed: always ask first for their approval.

Observe local customs. Respect local dress codes and dress modestly when appropriate.

Interact and spend time with local people. Be aware that your cultural values may differ from theirs. They may, for example, have different concepts of time, personal space, communication and society. They are not wrong or inferior, just different.

Be aware of short-sighted emotional reactions, such as giving money out of compassion. This can be offensive. If you are moved to help a community in need, discuss the options with your tour leader.

Be open to experience local standards rather than expecting to find the same conditions as in your home town and/or country.

History
Green Olive Tours was established in 2007, originally called 'Tours in English', then rebranded as Green Olive Tours in early 2010.

In 2012 a Company was registered and a charter was drafted that transformed the enterprise from a private business into a hybrid cooperative. The new company, Green Olive Collective is managed democratically by the people working in the organization, and has a broad mandate. Green Olive Collective Inc. is registered in the USA, has Palestinian and Israeli working partners, and over 120 Investors and Members from 22 countries around the globe. Membership is open to everyone.

Green Olive Tours Green Olive Tours was the first project of the Collective, and now conducts tours in four countries. Other projects include Madeinpeace.com, a fair trade merchandising enterprise which markets products from the underserved or oppressed populations in the regions where the tours operate. Our Volunteer Program offers many opportunities for our clients to give back to communities in the countries where we operate.

Green Olive Collective accepts Members and Partners regardless of gender, sexual preference, ethnic background, religion, national identity, citizenship, and any other markers of personal identity that are irrelevant to a person’s essential humanity, talents and aspirations. The Collective binds itself to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The organization is a Social Enterprise and a Workers Collective. Our function is to generate economic benefit for the Members, and social, cultural and political activity that cultivate humane and just societies.

As a Social Enterprise, the organization’s role in society is to provide information, services and products that help heal and repair the rifts that cause oppression and dysfunction between people, and between human activity and the planet that hosts us. This includes educational, creative, and pro-active projects that both illuminate the issues, and provide tools for progressive change.

As a Workers Collective, we provide a democratic governing framework, nurture the relationships among the members, and provide a working environment that is supportive and sustaining, enabling the members develop both professionally and personally.

Mission Statement of Green Olive Tours
Green Olive Tours is a social enterprise tour agency providing tours that cover the history, culture, and political geography of the countries in which we coperate. The tours provide benefit to the indigenous population through the hiring and training of local tour guides, overnight stays with families & small guest houses, and encouraging visitors to purchase local crafts directly from producers and Fair Trade outlets. In addition many of our tours include volunteer opportunities with disadvantaged groups in the same areas that the tours visit.

Some tours are more cultural and emphasise people-to-people contact, while others have more political content.

Many of the tours also visit sites of historical, cultural and religious interest, placing them within the context of the ongoing analysis provided by the guide.

Green Olive Tours in Ethiopia aims to provide our guests with:

A cultural, historical and political understanding of the country

Visits to cultural, historical and religious sites.

Dozens of tribes live in the area, each with their own language, culture, religion, etc. Before we enter the city we visit one of the tribes; the Dorze tribe. The Dorze tribe are famous for their weaving practices. We take a genuine look in their community, meet some people, and visit the weaving workshops and enjoy beautiful views over the area.
In the morning we organize a showcase event at the schools where you presented the Yoga workshops. The families of the children will be invited, in addition to local media, newspapers and possibly television, for a little publicity.

The goal is to show Ethiopian society what the workshops were about and to demonstrate the relationships between local development and this type of participation from internationals such as your group. This will also help the development of our partner NGO, Dires.

If you have an early flight then arrangements will be made to take you to the airport in a timely fashion. Those of you not flying in the afternoon will go to a traditional restaurant for dinner and enjoy Ethiopian food, dance and music.

Then those taking the evening flight will be shuttled to the airport.
